Working with Young Men to Promote Sexual and Reproductive Health.
Abstract
An expert meeting was held in February 2001 to bring together researchers, practitioners and policy makers to discuss innovative and successful work to promote sexual and reproductive health amongst young men in developing countries. As a result of the meeting, this summary and guide to good practice was produced. It includes a number of illustrative case studies of the work of the projects, a discussion of key issues raised, and guidelines for work with young men. The text is divided into five main sections:
The introduction discusses the importance of work with men and questions 'Why work with young men?' It then describes the objectives and participants involved in the expert meeting, and the projects represented.
The background section discusses the key issues underlying the need for work with young men.
Section 3, Projects, provides case study descriptions of the projects outlined in the meeting, presented under the headings: What do young men think and do? Advocacy; Information and/or services to improve reproductive and sexual health; Outreach work; Youth and peer-led projects.
Section 4, Some Key Issues, discusses the themes and issues raised by the participants: Why work with young men? Advocating for work with young men; Recruiting young men and sustaining their involvement.
Section 5, Conclusions, provides guidelines for working with young men to promote reproductive and sexual health.
There is a short list of references, and an appendix listing the projects and participants involved in the meeting.
