The joys and pitfalls of doing an historical institutionalist inquiry in Malawi

Abstract

This paper presents the authors' experiences of conducting historically grounded institutionalist research in Malawi. By highlighting the challenges and the joys encountered, the author hopes to contribute to the endeavours of other researchers working in the framework of historical institutionalism and elite theory, especially in respect of what to expect and therefore how to plan fieldwork in Malawi or other developing countries in Africa.
