Teenage sexuality: Girls in Kenya tell their stories.

Abstract

This briefing is based on experiences told between 2005 and 2007 by 9 teenage girls in a girls' sports and development programme in Kilifi, coastal Kenya. The key issues that emerged were: menstruation and its impact on school and sexuality; sexual dilemmas (desire and fear); abortion ('illegal, unsafe and happening'); and shifting social relations (a challenge for policy). HIV/AIDS was not a major concern, although it is argued that it should be, and that communication about it needes to be improved. Other implications for policy are also ssed.
