Evaluation of mineral waste from Costa Rica for whiteware and/or structural ceramics. (Report No. CR/02/049N)
Abstract
This report describes the results of characterisation and evaluation of a suite of quarry waste samples from Costa Rica for whiteware and/or structural ceramics. The study was carried out as part of the Minerals from Waste project (R7416) funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) under the Knowledge and Research (KAR) programme. Silica sand is quarried at the Sicorsa Quarry, Cartago, Costa Rica and as a result large quantities of mineral residues (waste) are generated mainly as fine grained material (less than 2 mm in size).
The aim of the study was to investigate the utilisation of mineral waste from this plant as a source of construction and/or industrial minerals. This report presents a preliminary technical assessment of the potential of the waste for whiteware and /or structural ceramics. A full evaluation of the waste will require additional economic, social and environmental factors to be taken into consideration.
