Accessibility statement for ‘Ask the government a question’ service

This accessibility statement applies to the ‘Ask a government a question’ service, which consists of a SmartSurvey survey, hosted on the surveys.publishing.service.gov.uk domain.

This service is managed by Government Digital Service on behalf of the Cabinet Office. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

We’ve made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • the labels for some questions may not match the input fields for screen readers
  • the page titles do not reflect page heading or reflect if there’s an error on the page

Although basic frontend accessibility checks have been carried out, this service has not been fully audited to WCAG 2.1 standards, so we are not able to completely understand the accessibility issues in the service. We plan to carry out a full audit in the near future.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Government Digital Service is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is not compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard. The non-compliances are listed below.

This service has not been fully audited to WCAG 2.1 standards, so we are not able to understand completely the accessibility issues in the service. We plan to carry out a full audit in the near future.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

In the ‘Enter your details’ section, the text alternative labels for each question does not match with what the text box or dropdown selector is, so people using a screen reader may not understand what each component is. This fails WCAG 2.1 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

The page titles for each page do not match the heading for the corresponding page, so people using a screen reader may not understand what specific page they are looking at. This fails WCAG 2.4.2 success criterion (Page Titled).

The page title also does not reflect if there is an error message on the page, so people using a screen reader may not know that there is an error that they need to action. This fails WCAG 3.3.1 success criterion (Error Identification).

A full accessibility audit has not taken place for this service. We plan to carry out an audit in the near future to understand these issues further, look into issues we are not yet aware of, and make any fixes we can.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

As a full accessibility audit has not taken place for this service, we plan to carry an audit out in the near future, so that we can understand these issues further, as well as other issues that we are not aware of, and make any fixes that we can.
