Reporting week 44: 30 October to 5 November 2023
During week 44, emergency department acute bronchiolitis attendances continued to increase in children aged under 1 year and aged between 1 and 4 years. There were further increases in most acute respiratory infection syndromic indicators in children aged under 5 years, in line with expected trends. Emergency department and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators continued to decrease nationally.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, NHS 111 calls for cough and difficulty breathing increased in infants aged less than 1 year. Other respiratory indicators were stable nationally and at or below seasonally expected levels.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, there were further decreases in COVID-19-like GP consultations across all age groups and regions. There were continuing increases in lower respiratory tract infections, bronchiolitis and acute bronchitis, particularly in children under 1 year and between 1 and 4 years, in line with seasonally expected trends.
Please note this bulletin includes an additional GP data source ORCHID (Oxford and Royal College of General Practitioners Clinical Informatics Digital Hub) to improve geographical coverage. Work is ongoing to ensure compatibility between the 2 data sources for some indicators; these will be presented from a single source (identifiable by the population coverage included in each chart presented).

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections increased, largely due to further increases in children aged under 1 year, but remain within seasonally expected levels.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, emergency department attendances for acute respiratory infections, including acute bronchiolitis/bronchitis continued to increase, particularly in infants under 1 year of age. COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease across all ages and UKHSA regions.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 44, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing and ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ increased.
