Reporting week 46: 13 November to 19 November 2023
There were further increases across a number of acute respiratory infection indicators during week 46, including emergency department (ED) attendances and GP out-of-hours contacts. These increases were still particularly observed in children. ED acute bronchiolitis attendances also continued to increase with attendances increasing in infants aged under one year during week 46. ED and GP in-hours COVID-19-like indicators continued to decrease nationally.
Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, total NHS 111 calls continued increasing in children aged under 15 years. There were increases observed in cold and flu calls in children aged 1 to 4 years and there were also increases in NHS 111 calls for cough and difficulty breathing in children aged under 15 years. Vomiting calls continued to increase during week 46 in children aged under 1 year and aged 1 to 4 years.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, there were further increases in the GP in-hours consultation rates for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, particularly in children under 5 years of age. Bronchiolitis consultations continued to increase in children aged under 5 years in line with seasonally expected levels. COVID-19-like consultations continued to decrease during week 46.

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections continued to increase, particularly in children aged under 15 years. Contacts for acute bronchitis/bronchiolitis also increased, noted in children aged under 1 year and aged 1 to 4 years, in line with seasonally expected trends.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system
During week 46 there were further increases in ED attendances for acute respiratory infections; attendances remain elevated in children aged under 1 year and 1 to 4 years. Attendances for acute bronchiolitis/bronchitis continued to increase, with attendances increasing in the under 1 year age group while decreasing slightly in 1 to 4 years. Pneumonia attendances increased and are at above seasonally expected levels; increases were most notable in adults aged 15 to 44 years. ED COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease during week 46.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system
During week 46, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing remained stable.
