Syndromic surveillance summary: 2 November 2023 week 43

During week 43, emergency department (ED) acute bronchiolitis attendances continued to increase in children aged under 5 years, but particularly those aged under one year, in line with expected seasonal trends. There were further increases in most acute respiratory infection syndromic indicators in children aged under 5 years, in line with expected trends. ED COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease nationally.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, NHS 111 calls for cough and difficulty breathing increased in children under 5 years of age in line with seasonal expectations.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, GP in-hours consultations for the COVID-19-like indicator has decreased. Other respiratory indicators remain in line with seasonally expected trends.

Please note this bulletin includes an additional GP data source ORCHID to improve geographical coverage. Work is ongoing to ensure compatibility between the 2 data sources for some indicators; these will be presented from a single source (with the population coverage included).

GP out-of-hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, GP out-of-hours contacts for respiratory syndromes, including acute respiratory infection, difficulty breathing, wheeze, asthma and acute bronchitis, increased.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, emergency department attendances for acute respiratory infection and acute bronchiolitis continued to increase nationally, with increases in acute bronchiolitis attendances particularly notable in children aged under one year. COVID-19-like attendances continued to decrease nationally during week 43, across all age groups and UKHSA regions.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

During week 43, daily ambulance calls for difficulty breathing continued to increase nationally. Calls for ‘cardiac or respiratory arrest’ also increased during week 43 but remain similar to levels expected for the time of year.
