Syndromic surveillance summary: 14 April 2022 week 14

Reporting week: 4 April to 10 April 2022.

During week 14, ‘COVID-19-like’ indicators decreased. Selected gastroenteritis indicators remained above seasonal levels, particularly in the 5 to 14 years age group.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 14, NHS 111 calls and online assessments for ‘potential COVID-19’ decreased. Overall, calls and assessments for other respiratory indicators either remained stable or decreased. NHS 111 calls and assessments for diarrhoea increased in week 14, particularly in the 5 to 14 years age group, and remain above expected levels.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 14, GP in-hours ‘COVID-19-like’ consultations decreased. Upper respiratory tract infections were stable overall but increased in adults aged 45 years and over. There was a slight decrease in chickenpox during week 14; rates remain below seasonally expected levels.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 14 there were small increases in acute respiratory infections in adults aged 15 years and over. GP out-of-hours contacts for gastroenteritis and vomiting continued to increase in children aged 5 to 14 years.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 14, COVID-19-like emergency department attendances decreased nationally and across all age groups. Gastroenteritis attendances remained stable and above seasonally expected levels but increases continued in the 5 to 14 years age group.

Attendances for influenza-like illness continue to increase in the over 65 years age group and remain above seasonally expected levels.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

Nationally, ‘COVID-19-like’ and difficulty breathing calls decreased during week 14.
