Details

The report is a first step in improving the Silage, Slurry and Agricultural Fuel Oil Regulations (the “SSAFO” regulations) which govern how farmers should store livestock slurry. It makes recommendations on improvements to the regulatory framework and provision of advice to farmers about the management and storage of slurry.

Government and industry will continue to work in partnership to implement the recommendations.

The project looked at a number of contentious issues. This included investigating whether it was possible to introduce flexibility to closed periods (when fertilizers may not be spread). The Project Group concluded from the evidence available that it was not possible at present and recommended that any new evidence be considered.

Research commissioned for the project has also been published. The report will be of interest to livestock farmers and environmental non-governmental organizations.
