Detail of outcome

We have decided we will not introduce guidance on the subject content, but are adopting all our other proposed rules and guidance for reformed AS and A level ancient languages qualifications. We have made some drafting changes to clarify some of our expectations; in particular, we have specified that the qualification’s specification must include any vocabulary and grammar lists.

Our new rules will require reformed AS and A level ancient languages qualifications to comply with the Department for Education’s AS and A level subject content for ancient languages, our assessment objectives, and our rules around the use of vocabulary and grammar lists.

Our guidance explains how awarding organisations should interpret our assessment objectives.

Consultation description

This consultation is about the rules and guidance we plan to put in place for new AS and A levels in ancient languages (classical Greek and Latin). These rules will apply to the exam boards that want to offer new classical Greek and Latin AS and A levels from September 2016.

This consultation takes forward decisions made following our earlier consultation ‘Developing new GCSE, A level and AS qualifications for first teaching in 2016’, and is part of Ofqual’s work supporting the government’s changes to GCSEs, AS and A levels.
