You need a licence to operate a left-hand drive stretched limousine public service vehicle (PSV) in Northern Ireland.

Left-hand drive stretched limousines, seating no more than 8 passengers in addition to the driver, are classified as private hire taxis and need a PSV inspection.

How to apply

You can arrange a PSV inspection at a Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) test centre.

Visit the nidirect website to find contact details for your nearest test centre and to book a test.

Conditions

Your LHD limousine will be subject to a road worthiness test. It must have:

  • a mounted fire extinguisher
  • a spare wheel and tools, or a puncture repair kit if there is no facility to carry a spare wheel
  • current PSV insurance

You won’t be granted a licence if your left-hand drive limousine is found to have capacity for more than 8 passengers plus the driver.

If your left-hand drive limousine is from America, it must have glass marked in compliance with either British or European standards, or Federal or Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

The tyres must be suitable for the stretched vehicle’s weight. Any optional side lamps fitted to the vehicle must only emit an amber light.
