Synopsis
While on passage west of Orkney in poor weather, MV Fri Stream suffered a main engine failure that left her immobilised and drifting onto a lee shore. She was taken in tow by the rig supply vessel Edda Frigg, who took her to a safe anchorage in Deer Sound. Fri Stream was eventually moved alongside in Kirkwall by the ETV Anglian Prince. However, during this manoeuvre the Chief Officer sustained a broken arm when a rope under load slipped from a single post mooring point.
Action taken
The Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents has written to the owners of Fri Stream recommending that they review the mooring arrangements onboard, and take such action as is necessary to provide a safe means of mooring the vessel when operating in coastal harbours and seaways.
