Data is given for the academic year 2009/10, for all Local Authorities in England.
The figures relate to the previous government’s target on PE and sport (national indicator 57). They are published for the first time this year as official statistics as they form part of a regular time series. At a national level, the statistical release shows that:
- Across Years 1 to 11, 86% of pupils participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week, compared with 81% in the academic year 2008 to 2009.
- Across Years 1 to 13, 82% of pupils participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week, compared with 77% in 2008 to 2009.
- Data was collected by gender for the first time in 2009 to 2010, which showed that 81% of girls and 84% of boys in Years 1-13 participated in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE each week.
- Figures show that across the primary years, i.e. years 1 to 6, the majority of children are participating in at least 120 minutes of curriculum PE (93% of years 1 to 2 and 95% of years 3 to 6); however, on entry to secondary school, a difference begins to emerge, with a decrease in the numbers participating becoming clearly evident (87% of pupils in years 7 to 9; 64% in years 10 to 11, dropping to 23% in years 12 to13). When compared to 2008 to 2009, figures for years 1 to 9 are similar: 90% of years 1 to 2, 93% of years 3 to 6, and 85% of years 7 to 9 participated in 120 minutes of curriculum PE in 2008 to 2009. For years 10 to 13, improvements can be seen: in 2008 to 2009, 45% of pupils in years 10 to 11 and 8% of pupils in years 12 to 13 were participating in 120 minutes of curriculum PE.
The report also contains figures for each Local Authority.
