The latest national statistics on arrests for recorded crime (notifiable offences) and the operation of certain police powers under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE).

The annual release is presented on a financial year basis and covers the number of persons arrested for recorded crime (notifiable offences) by type of offence, age, sex, and police force area in England and Wales. The publication also includes information relating to police stops and searches of persons and vehicles including the reasons for the searches.

The bulletin is released by the Ministry of Justice and produced in accordance with arrangements provided by the UK Statistics Authority.

The 2006 to 2007 release was revised on 30 September 2008 following the reporting of revised data by Northamptonshire Police Force on the number of persons detained for more than 24 hours under Part IV of the PACE Act and then released. The update affected tables PE and P5, the associated text commentary on page 7 and paragraphs 28 and 29, as well as England and Wales totals in the tables.

From 2007 to 2008 responsibility for these statistics passed to the Home Office. They are now published in the annual bulletin ‘Police powers and procedures, England and Wales statistics’.
