UK-Türkiye joint statement on illegal migration

Published 9 August 2023

Irregular migration due to armed conflicts, instability and economic hardship is a global challenge.

International, regional and bilateral cooperation is necessary to manage irregular migration and to combat criminal networks that take advantage of vulnerable migrants risking their lives by undertaking perilous journeys.

To put a stop to this, all countries must exert joint efforts to shoulder the responsibility together.

In this regard, Türkiye and the UK today reiterate their commitment to work together in the field of migration, as well as to strengthen cooperation with countries of origin and transit.

Within the framework of existing collaboration, the UK will support the Centre of Excellence to be established by the Turkish National Police, as a sign of this resolve. This Centre will enrich existing expertise in both countries with respect to activities aimed at disrupting criminal networks organising illegal journeys.

Türkiye and the UK will also pursue common goals at the international and multilateral level to prevent irregular migratory movements and combat migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
