Syndromic surveillance summary: 9 June 2022 week 22

During week 22 there were small increases observed in bronchitis and bronchiolitis syndromic indicators in children aged under one year.

Remote health advice syndromic surveillance system

During week 22, NHS 111 sore throat calls continued to increase and remain above seasonally expected levels. Please note that week 22 includes a bank holiday weekend (with 2 public holiday days) when NHS 111 call and online assessment numbers are traditionally higher thereby making assessment of recent trend difficult.

GP in hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 22, GP in-hours consultations for pharyngitis and/or scarlet fever decreased slightly. Please note, week 22 includes data up to and including 5 June, which includes 2 bank holidays when routine GP in-hours services are limited. Trends should therefore currently be interpreted with some caution.

GP out of hours syndromic surveillance system

During week 22, GP out-of-hours contacts for acute respiratory infections increased but remain at expected levels. There were small increases in acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis and ‘difficulty breathing, wheeze or asthma’ contacts, mainly in infants aged less than 1 year. Please note that week 22 includes a bank holiday weekend (with 2 public holiday days) when GP out-of-hours contacts are traditionally higher thereby making assessment of recent trend difficult.

Emergency department syndromic surveillance system

During week 22 there were small increases in selected respiratory indicators including attendances for acute respiratory infection and acute bronchitis and bronchiolitis. Increases were particularly noted in children aged under one and between 1 and 4 years.

Ambulance syndromic surveillance system

COVID-19-like and difficulty breathing ambulance calls remained stable during week 22.
