Background

In the Autumn Statement (22 November 2023), the government announced funding of up to £6 million over three years to support the establishment of a new National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences. A consultation was launched on 12 January 2024 to determine the best way to establish a National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences. Responses to the call for evidence highlighted overwhelming support for this initiative.

The government has consistently emphasised how essential it is to build mathematical capabilities in the UK and the importance of providing support to the sector in a long-term and sustainable way. We have also seen the success that the existing world-class UK National Academies have had over many years in supporting their respective disciplines and we recognise the potential value of a similarly dedicated organisation for the UK mathematical sciences community. This grant will support the establishment of a new incipient National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences.

On 27 March 2024 the government published its call for evidence response which set out the proposed focus and objectives for a new incipient National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences. As part of the response, the government published draft requirements which it would expect an organisation that successfully applied for funding to be able to deliver, in order to achieve the objectives of a National Academy focused on Mathematical Sciences.
