Insurance and in-house staff with SIA licence-linked training

Published 28 February 2024

1. Request

We are exploring the possiblity of having some of our team complete the SIA qualification to be able to support and assist in the security of our bars as in-house security.

  1. In the event they complete the qualification will our public liabilities insurance cover them, or will they need to be insured additionally?

  2. Do you have any recommended training providers in the Cheltenham area?

2. Response

I can confirm the SIA holds this information.

2.1 Question 1

The SIA is not involved in insurance or the types of insurance required at venues to cover their security. You would need to assess the terms of your insurance. However, if some of your team are to undertake SIA training to assist the security operatives at your bars, it may be that these individuals also require an SIA licence. Please ensure that you are aware of, and assess, what activities they are going to be undertake to assist the security and whether those activities amount to them requiring a licence.

You can find out more here: Find out if you need an SIA licence.

2.2 Question 2

The SIA has a tool for you to find a training provider in your local area. It can be found online here: Search for a Training Provider.
