Haiti: names
This section tells HM Passport Office operational staff about names in Haiti.
Name alignment
A married woman’s passport will show her name as:
- surname: husband’s surname / her maiden name (for example: Smith / Jones)
- forename: her forename
HM Passport office will not ask a customer to align the passport to remove the maiden name if the husband’s surname in the Haiti passport matches the surname the customer would like to use in the British passport.
Haiti: legitimacy
This section tells HM Passport Office operational staff about legitimacy in Haiti.
Legitimacy
Haiti recognises a difference between legitimate and illegitimate births.
The child will be considered:
- legitimate:
- if the parents were married to each other at the time of birth
- if the parents marry after the birth and both parents are named on the child’s birth certificate
- illegitimate if the parents never marry
Haiti: documents
This section tells HM Passport Office operational staff about documents in Haiti.
Birth certificates
Haiti birth certificates identify if the child was born to married parents or not, the birth certificate will show:
- enfant legitime, if the child is born to parents who are married
- enfant naturel, if the child is born to parents who are not married
