Guidance for door supervisors intervening with patrons in March 2019

Published 10 June 2021

1. Request

Guidance from the SIA and/or a copy of a door supervisor handbook or policies that were in place on 23 March 2019, dealing with the guidance given to door supervisors when intervening with patrons when they perceive there to be a threat and/or physically restraining patrons.

2. Response

I confirm that we do not hold the specific information that you have requested. The SIA is not responsible for producing handbooks or policy documentation detailing the guidance for door supervisors when intervening with patrons when they perceive there to be a threat and or when they are physically restraining patrons. Policies are more likely to be held by a venue or the security company that employs door supervisors.

However, I have set out below information which I believe will assist your enquiries.

The SIA is required by law to set or approve standards of training and this is done by creating and publishing specifications for learning and qualifications.

I have attached the ‘Specification for Learning and Qualifications for Conflict Management’, which includes sessions on diffusing conflict and the application of communication skills. I have also attached the ‘Specification for Learning and Qualifications for Physical Intervention Skills’, which covers sessions on an introduction to physical skills, disengagement techniques and escorting techniques.

The specification documents included with this response are the versions that were available in March 2019. Newer versions are available from our ‘Read the specifications for SIA licence-linked training’ page.

The SIA produced z cards and posters to remind operatives of safe practice in physical intervention, which were distributed throughout 2018 and 2019. I have attached 3 examples.

The following attachments are available from our ‘Advice for security operatives’ page:

  • Guide to safer restraint poster
  • Guide to safer physical intervention for door supervisors
  • Safer physical intervention for door supervisors poster
