Getting the best from your adviser

Published 20 August 2019

To get the best out of your OISC regulated adviser, you should always make sure you:

  • Are clear with your adviser about what you want, and what they are going to do for you;
  • Are completely honest about your situation, or any changes to your situation that may occur once you have engaged your adviser;
  • Understand the cost of the work that is going to be done for you, as well as how and when you will be expected to pay for it;
  • Understand what the adviser is telling you. Ask questions and provide your opinion on what you want to do.

Take notes of any conversations you have with your adviser or other employees at your OISC regulated organisation, keeping records of:

  • Who you spoke to;
  • When you spoke to them;
  • What was said, and;
  • Any future actions that were agreed, including deadlines.

Keep copies of all relevant paperwork, including emails, and read through them carefully. If you do not understand them, ask your adviser to explain them to you.

Send any important documents to your adviser by the most secure method possible, such as via a mail service that allows you to track the progress of your letters/parcels. You should also confirm with your adviser that they have been received.

Taking these steps, should help to ensure that you get the best outcome and service from your adviser.
