BCG and SCID screening data flowchart

Data flow process for Bacillus Calmette–Guérin vaccine (BCG) vaccination and Severe Combined immunodeficient Syndrome (SCID) screening.

Step 1

BCG eligibility identified at booking appointment and recorded in maternal notes.

Step 2

Baby born in hospital in community or home birth.

Step 3

Midwife, neonatal nurse or paediatrician assesses and records BCG eligibility on:

  1. NIPE S4N.
  2. Local Maternity IT system.
  3. Discharge summary to GP or health visitor (HV).

Data will be transferred to CHIS via NEMS or trad feed.

Step 4

Offer SCID screening.

If declined go to step 5.

If accepted see steps 6 to 9.

Step 5

Notify GP or HV via discharge summary or suitable local alternative and inform CHIS. Follow local procedures for declining

Discharge.

Step 6

Referral for SCID screening via local systems, includes mother’s medical history, checklist, translation needs.

Step 7

Laboratory will notify the SCID result to Northgate NBS Failsafe Solution.

Data will be transferred to CHIS via NEMS or trad feed.

Step 8

BCG providers will liaise with CHIS to access the SCID result.

Step 9

BCG vaccine appointment: given, not given or declined.

Inform GP, HV, and CHIS if the BCG vaccine was given, not given or declined and record in PCHR. This should be done within 5 working days.

Discharge.
