Personal information charter

The National Measurement and Regulation Office charter sets out what you can expect from us when we ask for, or hold, your personal information.

It also covers what we ask from you to help us keep your information up to date.

Your privacy

It is important to us that we protect your privacy and comply with the Data Protection Act 1998.

When we ask you for personal information, we promise:

  • to tell you why we need it
  • to only ask for what we need
  • to look after it and make sure it’s only accessible to those with a genuine need to see it
  • to let you know where information is shared between organisations to give you better services, and to give you the opportunity to opt out of this where we can
  • not to make your personal information available for commercial use without your permission

In dealing with your personal information, we will:

  • value the personal information you give to us and make sure we respect that trust
  • abide by the law when it comes to handling personal information
  • provide training to staff who handle personal information and respond appropriately if personal information is not used or protected properly
  • give you the opportunity to opt out of our communications as and when they are sent out
  • never give your name to any third party for direct mail

In return, to help us keep your information reliable and up to date, we ask you to:

  • give us accurate information
  • tell us as soon as possible of any changes, for example if you change address
