About

DCMS earnings estimates provide important information on how the DCMS sectors contribute to the economic well-being of the workforce, and whether inequalities exist between workers with different characteristics.

All estimates on this page represent the latest version according to updates in methodology.

Included estimates:

DCMS releases two separate estimates for earnings:

  • DCMS’s preferred measure of headline measure of earnings are calculated based on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE). This survey uses employee data sampled from the PAYE system, but does not provide detailed employee characteristics. The ASHE dataset provides a snapshot of earnings in the UK for April of each year, with DCMS producing estimates for employee median annual earnings, median weekly earnings, and the gender Pay Gap
  • hourly earnings estimates are calculated based on the Office for National Statistics Annual Population Survey (APS). The APS provides self-reported earnings data and estimates are therefore less robust than those from the ASHE. The APS includes more demographic information and can be used to estimate earnings for different demographic groups.

For information on how these estimates are produced please see the relevant technical report for each release.
