The Immigration and Social Security Co-ordination (EU Withdrawal) Act 2020 ends free movement at the end of the transition period (31 December 2020) and paves the way for the UK’s Points-Based Immigration System.
The act ends free movement, making citizens from the EU, the EEA and EFTA states of Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, and their family members, subject to UK immigration controls at the end of the transition period. It further protects the status of Irish citizens in UK immigration law.
The act also enables changes to be made to the current rules for social security co-ordination, maintaining consistency between the future immigration system and the UK’s future arrangements on social security.
