Notarial and documentary services guide for Egypt
Documents, certificates and letters available at British embassy in Egypt.
Overview
The British Embassy Cairo can only provide a very limited range of notarial and documentary services for British nationals in Egypt.
Where local notaries can provide services, the British embassy will not provide them. In many cases local notaries or lawyers can provide services more cheaply, quickly and conveniently.
You must make an appointment for each service that requires your personal attendance. Use the links after each service to make an appointment.
Before booking, make sure you have selected the correct service and that the document will be accepted by the relevant authority. This could be the local town hall, registry office, tax authorities, immigration office or another authority either in Egypt, the UK or a third country.
Services we provide in Egypt
Consular staff in Egypt can:
- administer an affirmation (for marriage purposes only)
- prepare a local burial permission letter
What to bring to your appointment

Payment
We accept payment by Visa, Visa Electron, or MasterCard.
Proof of identity
For all appointments for notarial services you will need to bring acceptable proof of your identity. We accept passports or national identity cards as proof of identity.
Administer an affirmation
This service is for people who would like to get married in Egypt under the civil law.
- you need to complete the following form Affirmation of Marital Status template
- once you have filled in the form you need to print it off in the portrait format and on one single page
- you then need to gather documentary evidence showing that you and your partner are both single and free to marry. Please see the information on getting married abroad about what documents you need to provide.
- once you have completed the form and have gathered all of your documents you need to Book an appointment to sign the affirmation at the British Embassy Cairo
- when you come to the Embassy for your appointment you need to bring the following with you:
- The Affirmation of Marital Status template that you have complete and printed off
- proof of identity
- The documentary evidence showing that you and your partner are both single and free to marry
- the correct fee – you can pay by debit/credit card
If you do not bring all of the above to your appointment we will be unable to complete your marriage declaration
We are unable to process applications if your partners ID card states that they are already married.
Prepare a local burial permission letter
You will need to provide personal identification, proof that you are the legal next of kin, death notification from doctor or hospital and the deceased’s passport
Standard letters include:
- for letters required by other embassies in order to get a visa to travel to their country. This includes the embassies of Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, and others. - for letters of no objection to help with school/university admission, please download the attached file
- for letters addressed to the traffic authority to help British nationals to apply for a driving/car licence, please download the attached file
Legalisation services
The Embassy no longer provides legalisation services.
For a UK document to be recognised in Egypt, you have to:
- legalise it first from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in London
- then the Egyptian Embassy in London
- the last step is to stamp it from the Egyptian Ministry of foreign Affairs in Egypt
- if you need an Arabic version then you have to approach the Ministry of Justice translation office then submit it together with the original document to be stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
For an Egyptian document to be used in the UK, it has to be:
- legalised by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Egypt
- then the Egyptian Consulate in London.
Services provided elsewhere
We no longer witness life certificates for British nationals claiming a British pension abroad. Please refer to the list of people working in a recognised profession who can do this for you.
Certified true copy of passports
This could now be done at one of the English speaking lawyers officers available at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/egypt-list-of-lawyers
Data protection
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office holds and uses data for purposes notified to the Information Commissioner under the Data Protection Act 1998. Such personal data may be disclosed to other UK government departments and public authorities.
