Provides leadership development for all SCS leaders aimed at developing their personal relationships, capability and behaviours while building their networks.
About us
The Civil Service Leadership Academy (CSLA) is part of the Government Skills and Curriculum Unit whose purpose is to accelerate the development of the knowledge, skills, networks and professional practice of all civil servants.
Our CSLA products are designed and delivered by experts from our learning partners, from within the CSLA team and experienced Senior Civil Service (SCS) leaders. Our approach to learning focuses on bringing leaders together from across the Civil Service to share experiences and expertise. We offer:
- Civil Service orientation for SCS who are new to the Civil Service;
- Deputy director induction for new to grade deputy directors;
- Director induction for new to grade directors;
- A directors’ network for Civil Service directors; and
- An open curriculum of workshops and events open to all SCS.
Our learning designs use a combination of new and existing leadership research and seek to create impactful leadership development by exploring real life leadership experiences. We aim to ensure positive wellbeing and inclusion are at the heart of all our leadership offers, while developing our SCS leaders to lead in complex times and build effective team performance.
Civil Service Orientation
Civil Service Orientation supports senior leaders, who are new to the Civil Service, to gain a comprehensive understanding of working in central Government and the building of personal networks through online content and events.

Deputy director induction
We are in the process of designing a fresh offer for newly promoted or externally hired deputy directors. The products are being designed to support a deputy directors in their first 100 days at this grade, using peer to peer and online learning as well as cross Civil Service networking. In terms of format, the offer will include short virtual seminars and a face to face residential event.

Directors’ Network
The Directors’ Network is a self-governing network that provides a safe, open space for directors to share, reflect, harness their collective experience and build networks beyond their departmental silos.
Open Curriculum
As well as our director and deputy director transition support, we have a range of products which are open to all SCS and are designed to support all SCS leadership journeys.
- CSLA open curriculum is a programme of workshops and events focusing on core leadership development, as well as topical issues.
- Civil Service Teaming helps teams and leaders to have a better impact on performance by considering how they use their skills, knowledge and networks to do their jobs well.
- Coaching provides one-to-one support to improve performance at work or help with working towards a goal.
