Apply for or renew your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you’re from the UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

An EHIC lets you get state healthcare in other EEA countries and Switzerland at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.

EHIC is free. Some services charge to help you apply - these are unnecessary and you don’t need to use them.

You’ll need to provide your:

  • full name
  • address
  • date of birth
  • National Insurance or NHS number (England and Wales)
  • CHI number (Scotland)
  • Health and Care number (Northern Ireland)

EHIC doesn’t replace travel insurance.

You’ll have to apply by post and show proof of residency if you’re not from the UK, EEA or Switzerland.

If you’re not from the UK, EEA or Switzerland

You’ll have to fill in and send an application form the the NHS Business Services Authority. You’ll also have to show evidence that you’re a resident of the UK. This can include:

  • your visa
  • a letter from the Home Office
  • a letter from your employer
  • an approved A1, S1, E101, E106 or E109 form
