UKVI account: terms and conditions

Published 19 February 2024

These terms and conditions apply to the use of a UKVI account.

What a UKVI account is

A UKVI account is an online service run by the Home Office as part of the Migration and Borders system.

Creating a UKVI account enables users to:

  • start, continue, and submit online UK applications relating to immigration and nationality
  • view applications submitted online
  • upload documents to support applications (in some cases)
  • access the online immigration status services such as ‘view and prove your immigration status’, ‘prove your right to work’ and ‘prove your right to rent (England)’, which allow immigration status information to be viewed
  • share immigration status information about the UKVI account holder with third parties by generating a share code, which provides time-limited access to the relevant data
  • update details in the UKVI account using the Update your UK Visas and Immigration account details service

To create or use a UKVI account, you must:

  • be a person intending to make a UK immigration or nationality application or have extant immigration status (“the account holder”) or be authorised to create and use the UKVI account on behalf of the account holder
  • ensure all information provided when creating or using a UKVI account or making an application is accurate and current

Creating a UKVI account

A UKVI account may be created for you as part of the immigration and nationality application process. You will be notified in the application process if this is the case and given information on how to access your account.

If you need to create a UKVI account separately from your application, you will need your:

  • passport or other permitted travel document, which we will use to read your biographic information such as name, nationality, date of birth and document number

  • email address
  • phone number

If you need to give someone access to your account so they can help you make an immigration or nationality application, you also need their email address and phone number.

To sign in, you need your passport or travel document number and date of birth, and access to your phone or email.

You should not give your UKVI account sign in details to anyone else or allow them to access your UKVI account unless they are your registered helper or proxy.

Adding a helper to a UKVI account

You can add a helper to a UKVI account, who will have their own sign in details and can view, edit and complete an application, but a helper cannot access the ‘view and prove’ services or ‘Update My Details’ service. The account holder will also have access to their UKVI account and can cancel a helper’s access to their UKVI account at any time using the ‘update your UK Visa and Immigration account details’ service.

When a proxy can create and use a UKVI account

Where an account holder is unable to act on their own behalf a proxy, who is an authorised individual to act on the account holder’s behalf, may create and use the UKVI account, as if they are the account holder.

A proxy may be required to provide evidence that they are authorised to act on behalf of the account holder.

Using a UKVI account

You must only use a UKVI account for lawful purposes. You must not restrict the use of the UKVI account by any other lawful user.

Users must not use the UKVI account to post or transmit any material that is:

  • illegal

  • obscene
  • defamatory
  • threatening
  • injurious

When using a UKVI account, you:

  • are responsible for all activities carried out in the UKVI account
  • must comply with all applicable laws, including any laws in the country in which you are accessing the UKVI account

When making an application using the UKVI account, you:

  • will be transferred to our secure payment pages, where payment is taken

  • are required as part of the application to also apply for a biometric immigration document and you may have to provide your biometrics (fingerprints and a photograph)

  • must contact UKVI if any of the information in your application changes, before a decision is made

Exclusion of liability

The Home Office is not liable for any loss or damage that arises from use of the UKVI account. This includes:

  • any direct, indirect, or consequential loss
  • any inability to use the UKVI account
  • any disruption to access to the UKVI account
  • any information that is lost or corrupted while data is being transmitted, processed or downloaded from the UKVI account.

Suspension, restriction, or termination of access to a UKVI account

References to countries and nationalities

A country or territory may be listed as a nationality or country in the UKVI account or application because it has a passport-issuing authority.

Amendments to terms and conditions

These terms and conditions may be amended at any time. Changes will be published on this page and will be binding on users from that point.
