Details

This release provides information on the levels of overall, authorised and unauthorised absence in:

  • state-funded primary schools
  • state-funded secondary schools

It includes information on:

  • reasons for absence
  • persistent absence
  • pupil characteristics
  • absence information for pupil referral units

The information is based on pupil level absence data collected via the school census.

It updates and supplements information published in the May 2015 release - ‘Pupil absence in schools in England, autumn term 2015’.

We have also published a response to the consultation on changes to absence statistics alongside the original consultation which was included in section 9 of ‘Pupil absence in schools in England: autumn 2013 and spring 2014’ in October 2014.

A guide on how we produce pupil absence statistics is also available.
