Road traffic statistics
Data and statistics about the vehicle miles travelled by vehicle type, road category and region.
The Department for Transport (DfT) publishes estimates of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) traffic within the road traffic statistics. We are seeking users’ views on a change to how HGV data is collected for road traffic statistics. From 2028, roadside counts of HGV traffic will be simplified into two categories: rigid and articulated vehicles. This change will not affect the information available on total HGV traffic within the published summary statistics. It will impact the level of disaggregation available for HGVs by number of axles in the count point level data that is available to download via the road traffic geographic website and API.
We are inviting users to provide comments on the proposed change by 31 August 2026.

Latest road traffic statistics
Road traffic statistics provide estimates of the vehicle miles travelled each year in Great Britain by vehicle type, road category and region. We release both quarterly and annual estimates. To monitor transport activity on a timelier basis for topical issues relating to transport, daily traffic trends are published monthly.
Our geographical website allows users to view and download estimated traffic flows on every link of the ‘A’ road and motorway network in Great Britain. The interactive map provides a mapped background to identify traffic flows in specific areas of the country.
Road traffic information on current and previous road traffic estimates are available.
