About the school rebuilding programme
Updated 11 December 2025
Applies to England
Expansion of the programme
The government has committed to expanding the school rebuilding programme. Nominations to identify a further 250 schools will re-open in early 2026. This is in addition to the 518 schools already selected for rebuilding.
Guidance and evidence requirements
Responsible bodies will have the opportunity to:
-
put forward schools for consideration against data the Department for Education (DfE) already holds – for example, condition data collection 2 (CDC2)
-
provide alternative supplementary evidence
New guidance on gathering evidence of structural issues not captured in CDC2 data is available. This includes information about the types of professional evidence DfE will require.
If your school has a structural or other issue that can’t be evidenced through CDC2 data that warrants its rebuilding, we encourage you to begin preparing now by commissioning surveys and gathering relevant reports, if they are not currently held. All evidence should be in the format stipulated in the guidance. This will ensure that nominations are complete and of the required standard when the nominations window re-opens.
Updates
This page will be updated when the next nomination round is launched.
Confirmed projects
There are currently 518 projects in the programme, which began in 2021. A list of confirmed projects is available, including information on the date when each was announced.
Schools are provisionally allocated a place on the programme subject to further due diligence, and projects will enter delivery at a rate of approximately 50 per year.
Prioritising schools for the programme
Schools are prioritised because they meet one or more of the following criteria. Their buildings:
- are of specific construction types that require replacement
- have the highest condition needs, as identified through the condition data collection (CDC) programme and verified through the collection of additional condition information
- have severe and urgent condition needs
- have risks with the potential to cause significant harm to pupils or staff
More information about how we prioritised schools is available in the methodology notes.
Nominating schools for the programme
Nominations are currently closed. The criteria for the 2022 nomination process can be found in the guidance, which is for reference only. We will publish further guidance when the next nomination round is launched.
Equalities impact assessments
We have published 2 equalities impact assessments related to the programme, covering the impact of the selection approach on school building users with protected characteristics.
Urgent and severe building condition issues
Responsible bodies must ensure the safety and maintenance of the buildings in their care. If you have an urgent and severe condition need you are unable to resolve, contact DfE for guidance.
