Final stages of work on the M1 near Wakefield

As part of the final stage to complete major improvement work on the M1 near Wakefield, roadworks are being removed with an extra lane open to traffic as technology is tested before the scheme fully opens.

A 50mph speed limit will remain in place while the technology is tested. A further announcement about the opening of the scheme will be made closer to the time.

Roadworks were removed last night from the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway between junction 39 (Denby Dale) and junction 41 (Morley). An extra lane has also opened on the northbound carriageway between junction 41 and junction 42 (Lofthouse), although further work will continue between these junctions into the new year.

This will be followed by an extra lane also being opened on the southbound carriageway between junction 41 (Morley) and junction 39 (Denby Dale) tomorrow morning, following a full closure of the road tonight dependent on the weather.

This work was due to be completed on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 December but due to the weather this had to be postponed.
