The British diplomatic presence in Hungary consists of the British Embassy in Budapest. Staff at the mission fall into two groups:

UK-based staff: career diplomatic staff, employed directly by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London, and sent to work at posts abroad for periods of 3-5 years,

Locally employed staff: local residents, employed in accordance with local employment law and practices.

Vacancies for local staff employed directly by the British Embassy in Budapest are rare. When positions become available, they are always listed on our website. They are posted under Current Vacancies as they become available. Please keep checking this page for the latest additions.

Please be aware that there are limited opportunities for promotion or progression, however, staff are encouraged to apply for other vacancies within the Embassy as they arise.


The Embassy occasionally offers internships which are advertised under Current Vacancies. This opportunity is for students and recent graduates who are local residents.

Students at UK universities who are British nationals and are considering a career in the Diplomatic Service can apply to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London for a placement under the FCO placement scheme or a variety of other schemes run by other government departments. The FCO in London also offers a number of work placements to talented individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, details of which are also available via the above website.

Application process

Applications for employment with the British Embassy in Budapest should be sent by e-mail in response to advertised vacancies only. Please refer to the guidance in our job advertisements.

When applying, please submit a completed job application form available from the website and ensure all sections are filled out and use the Supporting Statement box to explain clearly the motivation, skills and experience you could bring to the role. Please also attach your current CV in English.

All applicants must have a high level of spoken and written English (unless stated otherwise) and for most positions an additional fluency in Hungarian will be required.
