British High Commissioner hands over aviation security equipment to JNIA

British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Dianna Melrose, formally handed over state–of-the-art aviation security equipment to the Government of Tanzania on Friday 16th August 2013 at the Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam. Similar equipment will also soon be delivered in Zanzibar.

The equipment, designed to assist in broadening aviation security detection capability in Tanzania, included Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) machines and consumables; x-ray screening trays; walk through Metal Detector (WTMD) test pieces to test the airport’s ‘Walk Through Metal Detector’ machines; and a number of Hand Held Metal Detectors (HHMDS).

The High Commissioner also presented certificates to security staff from the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) on completion of the second of a week-long training course organised by the UK’s Department for Transport on the use of the explosive trace detection machines, x-ray screening, physical searches of baggage and people and general aviation security supervisor/manager skills.

Speaking at the event the British High Commissioner said:

“I am delighted that the UK government is working so closely with the Tanzanian Aviation Authority (TAA) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the TAA for their on-going excellent collaboration. ….. Terrorism is a global issue from which we are all potentially vulnerable. This is why it is so important that we continue to work together and share experiences and best practice in our efforts to improve aviation security standards across the region. This equipment will go a long way in helping the TAA protect passengers, airlines, airports and cargo in Tanzania”.

The equipment, which can detect a wide range of explosives and explosive devices, represents the latest explosive detection technology. The UK is also providing a full service support package and training.
