To influence and to inspire: Seychelles Chevening Alumni launched

Chevening Scholarship recipients have launched the Seychelles Chevening Alumni Association at the Brtish High Commissioner’s Residence.

Launched on the 30th anniversary of the award programme in Seychelles, the alumni association was introduced by the High Commissioner Lindsay Skoll.

“To interact, to influence, and to inspire: This is the real aim of this evening. To bring you together and build bonds between you. The network you form as prestigious Chevening alumni can, I am sure, help continue to promote the Chevening brand in Seychelles and can help attract the next generation of leaders and decision makers. But more than that, it can bring together some of the best and brightest people in Seychelles, to share ideas and experience, and to do what I know so many of you strive to do every day, to deliver real and sustainable benefits to the people of Seychelles,” said the High Commissioner.

The association has been launched with the dual aims of promoting the Chevening Scholarship programme in Seychelles and helping attract the next generation of leaders and decision makers; and to bring together some of the best and brightest people in Seychelles, to share ideas and experience, and to deliver real and sustainable benefits to the people of Seychelles.

“As so often during my time here, I recognise that whilst the numbers may be small, the impact is outstanding! The 54 Chevening scholarships awarded by the British High Commission in Victoria since 1984 have helped shape many of the people at the forefront of Seychelles today,” said High Commissioner Skoll.

“The scholarships awarded to the 54 Chevening scholars in Seychelles alone represent an investment by the British Government of well over two million pounds. You alumni are literally the living product of that investment. This is not a one-off donation; nor merely a symbolic gesture; but a genuine indication of our on-going commitment to this country and belief and willingness to invest in the future of the people of Seychelles.”

Chevening Scholarships are a prestigious global scheme, targeted at future leaders, influencers and decision makers, allowing them to study at world-class universities across the UK. Fulfilling their leadership potential, Chevening alumni have made key contributions to Seychelles’ development. Chevening scholars have returned to Seychelles to become Ministers, ambassadors and managing directors.

The Scholarships, which are funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), operate in over 100 countries worldwide. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject and at any UK university.
