The South African Water Research Commission is hosting a Global Water Solutions Symposium (“Local Solutions - Global Impact”) from 25-27 September, in conjunction with the South African Department of Science & Technology (DST) and the Department of Water Affairs (DWA). The aim is to discuss international solutions to water issues and to focus on innovation as key drivers of solving the policy issues. The Symposium will allow scientists, innovators, venture capitalists and developers to showcase their innovations and combines a symposium and technology exhibition into one event.

Funded by the UK Science and Innovation Network’s Global Partnerships Fund, Professor Tom Stephenson from Cranfield University in the UK is participating as international speaker to share his experience as the Chairman of University spin-out company Water Innovate and to make connections with South African universities and start-up companies. Professor Stephenson’s international reputation for research in water and wastewater engineering is demonstrated through publication of over 200 papers and his holding of an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) ‘Platform’ grant for 10 years. He leads the School Applied Sciences activities that embrace the key areas of manufacturing and materials and environmental science and technology.

This project was facilitated by the UK Science and Innovation Network in South Africa, with the aim of improving UK policy based on South Africa’s international experience and emerging opportunities.
