International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Statement by Resident Embassies in Romania

The United Nations General Assembly has designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In this context, the undersigned embassies applaud the efforts of Romanian NGOs to highlight the issues of domestic violence.

Domestic Violence, in its extreme manifestation, has resulted in the premature death of mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. It is generally accepted internationally that one in four women are the victims of domestic violence.

While domestic violence is a global problem, it requires local actions and solutions. The undersigned stand in solidarity with civil society in its efforts to improve the situation for victims of domestic violence in Romania. We are willing to share examples of international best practice and to learn from Romanian efforts to improve the safety of women in families.
