The British Embassy Santiago recently hosted a visit by The Globe theatre company to present William Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing. This was the company’s second visit to Chile.

Thanks to the support of the GREAT campaign and through contacts of the British Council Santiago, we partnered with co-sponsors Corpartes Foundation, owner of a state-of-the-art facility with some of the best acoustic in Latin America.

Performing three shows plus one exclusively for students, The Globe’s audiences were close to full capacity. The actors delighted the audience with their performance of Much Ado about Nothing, a comedy that even after 400 years of its release, still makes people laugh by presenting with humour situations that the audience can relate to nowadays.

The cast was formed by a group of eight renowned actors, who even took the time to have their pictures taken with some of the students in the audience. The play was seen by almost 2,000 people.

The success of this show in Santiago confirms the high regard Chileans have for Shakespeare. The Globe’s visit is a positive preamble to the activities that will be carried out in Chile in 2016 to commemorate 400 years of the death of this legendary British author, as part of the GREAT campaign and the British Council’s Shakespeare Lives campaign.

By celebrating William Shakespeare through the GREAT campaign we are not just celebrating cultural heritage but also creativity, tourism and education, which are important assets in terms of UK soft power and the relation it has with Chile.
