Land and property disputes seminar for British nationals in Jalandhar

The British High Commission New Delhi will host land and property disputes seminar for British nationals in Jalandhar, 10 February 2015.

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

This seminar is an endeavour to provide a platform for British nationals to get better information on the property laws in India and get a chance to discuss their concerns with lawyers, police officials and specialists at the same time.

British Deputy High Commissioner Chandigarh, David Lelliott, said:

We hope that this seminar will help British nationals to navigate the sometimes difficult issues around property ownership. As the migration patterns between our two countries become more complicated, with increasing numbers of British Punjabis looking to re-establish themselves here to contribute to and share in India’s growing prosperity, we are unfortunately likely to continue to see questions arising around property ownership. We are grateful to the Punjab authorities and local experts for their help in organising this event, as well as to colleagues from the Consular Department at the British High Commission New Delhi.

In the past, a large number of Indians have migrated and permanently settled in foreign countries leaving behind their homes and ancestral property in India. This has given rise to legal cases with their relatives and guardians, if they wish to dispose-of or repossess their properties in India.

The seminar has been organised to help these NRI Indians, and provide them a platform to seek legal view and tips and guidance on how to avoid family and legal disputes and how to resolve them if they do arise. This will also provide an opportunity to participants to discuss their concerns with legal experts, police officials and specialist organisations like NRI Sabha, which have been formed to help them.
