On Friday 24 October, Mr Wolfendale and Mr Ng celebrated their partnership of thirty years with a marriage ceremony at the British Embassy Tokyo. This was the second such ceremony held at the embassy since the UK’s Marriage Act changed in March this year.

In addition to legalising gay marriage in England and Wales, the changes to the Marriage Act allow same sex couples to be married at several British Diplomatic Missions around the world.

Speaking after Mr Wolfendale and Mr Ng’s marriage, Tim Hitchens, British Ambassador to Japan, said:

It is great to be able to celebrate same sex marriages at the British Embassy in Tokyo. Today’s ceremony is a celebration for the happy couple; a celebration of equality and rights for all; and a celebration of British values. The UK believes that human rights are universal and that lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender people should be free to enjoy the rights and freedoms to which people of all nations are entitled.
