By 2050, the human population will have reached nine billion people, with 75% of the world’s inhabitants living in cities; therefore a transformation of the 21st century city via the creative use of technology is key to addressing the challenges of climate change, population growth, demographic change, urbanisation and resource depletion. It demands that the world’s great cities adapt rapidly in order to survive and thrive over the coming decades.

Smart technologies and solutions are already becoming enablers of this transformation, helping address some of the challenges of rapid urbanisation by improving services, managing efficiency and delivering a higher standard of living. Smart technologies can be found in every aspect of citizens’ lives, from transport and waste management, to e-health and the Internet of Things.
