The British Embassy in Beijing held a garden party at the British Ambassador’s Residence to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the FCO’s prestigious Chevening Scholarships Programme. Over 100 Chevening alumni and guests attended the garden party, which was hosted by Andrew Key, Chargé d’Affaires at the British Embassy in Beijing. Patrick McLoughlin MP, Secretary of State for Transport, joined as guest of honour.

Andrew Key said:

The Chevening programme provides a unique opportunity for Chinese leaders of the future to build a global network of continuing professional significance. It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK and to increase mutual understanding between our two countries.

Chen Lu, News Editor at the Beijing News and 2011-2012 Chevening scholar at the London School of Economics and Political Science, said:

Thanks to the Chevening programme, I had an amazing year in a wonderful country. I learnt a lot from essay writing, but even more from the museums, libraries, lectures, theatres and even from a talk in bar. Don’t waste your time by staying in your room when you are in Britain.

The Chevening programme was launched in 1983 and has developed into a prestigious international scheme, attracting a wealth of high-calibre applicants from all around the world. Chevening scholars share the qualities of ambition, drive and leadership potential, a commitment to change and organisational development, and a talent for innovation and creativity with an excellent record of leadership across all sectors of public life.

The Chevening Scholarships are funded by the FCO and its partners and sponsors. Scholarship applicants are open to apply to any universities and courses in the UK. Since 1983, 42,000 of the world’s best and brightest from 118 countries have been awarded a Chevening Scholarship. The Programme has shaped up a prestigious and influential global alumni network, including over 3,100 alumni from the mainland China.

Chevening Scholarships will support over 600 established or emerging leaders for the 2014/15 academic year. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject and at any of the UK’s leading universities. Please visit Cheveninginchina for more information on application. Applicants from the mainland China should apply online by 15 December.
