Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. Chevening scholarships operate in more than 160 countries and territories worldwide, and this year the programme will support over 1,400 individuals. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding established or emerging leaders to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in any subject and at any of the UK’s leading universities.

Chris Wood, Representative of the British Office, Taipei, said: ‘The British government is proud to be able to support the development of tomorrow’s world leaders. Each year, Chevening scholarships are awarded to talented individuals who want to make a difference. I hope that Taiwan’s brightest and best will apply this year to join this global network.’

Taiwanese Chevening alumni have an excellent record of rising to positions of leadership across a wide range of fields: including government, politics, business, media, civil society and academia.

Speaking about his experience in the UK, Chevening alumnus Jung-chih Kao (2010/11 scholar; now Executive Director of the Judicial Reform Foundation) said that his education in the UK helped him to “develop a different way of thinking – wider, more strategic and pragmatic. This has been extremely important in trying to push for the judicial reforms needed to make the Taiwanese system fairer.”

Fashion designer Johan Ku (2009/10 scholar) who recently opened his flagship store in Taipei, said that “the Chevening scholarship allowed him to realise his ambition to make a connection to the global market”, by studying in the most famous fashion school in the world in the heart of the global fashion design industry: London. He took advantage of London and its opportunities, helping him to build a foundation for an international fashion career. One area that Johan believes set the UK apart is “its culture of diversity and creativity in which everyone has the freedom to express themselves.”

Applications for Chevening Scholarships must be submitted online at Chevening website. Applicants should read the online guidance and demonstrate how they meet the Chevening selection criteria before submitting an application. Further details are available at Chevening Taiwan. The deadline for applications is 08 November 2016.
