Five young film makers progressed to the third stage of the ‘Women in the New Egypt’ film competition to showcase issues facing women in Egypt after the 2011 revolution, organised by the British Embassy in Cairo, Misr International Films (Youssef Chahine) and the British Council.

The five participants will undergo further mentoring and be assisted with the skills they need to successfully produce their short films, under the expert guidance of MIF. The final five films will be screened as part of the Panorama European Film Festival, and a reception hosted at the British ambassador’s residence to celebrate the films. The eventual winner will be awarded a week long fellowship at a prestigious film institute in London and the second and third runners-up will also receive prizes.

HM Ambassador, James Watt said “Film is one of the most powerful forms of social communication. It can give expression to authentic voices to describe realities and people’s aspirations. With the professionals of MIF, we have set out to empower young first-time film-makers to do exactly this. The talent being shown by these young Egyptians is outstanding, and it is part of the great wave of creativity, new thinking and optimism that makes Egypt one of the best places on the planet to be these days. I am very excited about the results we are seeing from the workshops so far, and I look forward to the finished films later this year, which we shall be showing publicly.”

Marianne Khoury, MIF managing partner and film-maker said “MIF is dedicated to nurturing the talent of emerging film-makers. The initiative of “Women in The New Egypt” is timely given the events the country is currently witnessing. The resulting interaction with the youth of this generation has brought to the fore five new projects that will go into production in the coming days …. It is a joy to listen to their voices”

Last month the five participants began the process of realizing their five-minute creative films at a three-day workshop in Dahshur. The time was spent focusing on production skills and mentoring by famous Egyptian Director Mohamed Khan, teaching the film makers how to develop their ideas into film treatments.
