This study assessed whether it was necessary to update the guide to assessing safety risks at reservoirs published in 2004 (Interim Guide to Quantitative Risk Assessment for Reservoir Safety). It collected views from professionals working with reservoirs to identify any problems with applying the current guidance, as well as the specific needs that they might have. The existing guide provided a tool, in an Excel workbook, to work out the probability and consequences of a reservoir failing in the next 12 months.

The study concluded that the guide did need reworking to make sure that it would meet a wider range of reservoir owner and industry needs. This includes aligning with current policy and practice in assessing flood risk by the UK government.

The project was started in 2008 and completed in 2009.
