Changing your business name

If you have a Company Registration Number (CRN) you must tell Companies House if your business name has changed.

We will be notified of your new business name by Companies House. It will be shown on your business tax account (BTA) within 15 working days.

If you take over someone else’s VAT responsibilities

You must use the form VAT484 to tell HMRC within 21 days if you take over the VAT responsibilities of someone who has died or is ill and unable to manage their own affairs.

You must include the details of the date of death or the date the illness started.

If you’re unable to change your details online

If you’re unable to change your details online, you can use form VAT484 to do so.

Postal responses will take longer to process than changing your details online.

You need to:

  1. Download and save the Changes to VAT registration details (VAT484) (PDF, 215 KB, 2 pages) form on your computer.

  2. Print and complete the form.

  3. Send the form to the HMRC address on the form.
