United Utilities Water Limited (NPS/WR/019557): application made to abstract water
Published 8 January 2016
Applies to England
Details of the application
United Utilities Water Limited has applied to the Environment Agency to vary a licence.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006).
The application is to vary licence serial number NW/075/0004/006 which authorises the abstraction of water from groundwater at Aspatria at National Grid Reference NY 18 46.
The variation applied for is to increase the annual abstraction quantities for 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. The current licence authorises abstraction up to 365,000 cubic metres per year. The proposed increases are:
- Until 31 March 2016 - 414,000 cubic metres per year
- Until 31 March 2017 - 512,000,000 cubic metres per year
The hourly and daily quantities will not change (300 cubic metres per hour, 6000 cubic metres per day).
The increase is required to allow United Utilities to carry out maintenance works at one of their water treatment works, meaning they can’t get enough from another licence. During this time the licence will provide water to the Silloth and Wigton areas.
United Utilities have also applied to change conditions on the licence which relate to water level monitoring on a nearby watercourse.
