Shrewsbury Hydro Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from the River Severn at Castlefields Weir, Shrewsbury at National Grid Reference (NGR) SJ 50041 13007.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 108,000 cubic metres an hour
  • 2,592,000 cubic metres a day
  • 567,648,000 cubic metres a year

Between 1st January and 31st December inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for hydro-electric power generation and will be non-consumptive, with all water being returned to the River Severn immediately downstream of the weir at NGR SJ 50118 13006.

The hydro scheme will use a single underground, double-regulated, horizontal water propeller turbine on the right bank of Shrewsbury Weir (aka Castlefields Weir) on the River Severn in Shrewsbury. Shrewsbury Hydro Limited is applying to the Environment Agency for a full licence to abstract water from the river to let it flow through the water turbine before re-entering the river just below the weir. A hands off flow (HoF) will be maintained across the weir and new fish pass prior to the turbine abstracting any water.
